Building Crafts College achieves Practical Completion
We're very pleased to announce that we have achieved practical completion at the Building Crafts College, the UK’s leading provider of construction crafts training.
Our project reveals a sensitive and light-touch approach to working within the existing building in order to increase capacity and improve functionality.
Lightweight timber framing was used to infill a first floor void, mitigating alterations to the existing substructure and allowing the work to be completed quickly. The timber soffits have been left exposed, making the new structure legible within the workshop spaces.
Existing elements, including balustrades, have also been retained, reused and upgraded where possible, reducing waste and extending the life of materials already on site.
The project improves environmental comfort by increasing natural ventilation, introducing solar-control film to existing rooflights, and facilitating cooling for peak summer temperatures.
Completed in only 9-weeks during the summer break, this relatively small and modest intervention creates valuable new teaching space for the College, while making careful use of the building and the materials already there.
