Concept to Completion
We won this social housing project in Mions, France, through a competition launched in the OJEU (Official Journal of the European Union).
Approach
The small but ambitious project, built entirely from timber, was selected for its exemplary environmental credentials, and the sense of community that the design engenders.
Design
The scheme, in a suburb outside Lyon, comprises nine homes across three low-rise buildings. It boasts a timber structure, wood fibre insulation and timber board cladding. A communal biomass boiler, fired by wood pellets, provides the heat network across all nine homes.
Result
The three buildings are grouped around a central courtyard, which provides parking and access to and from each home. Individual owned gardens behind each building, orientated towards the sun, create a harmonious balance between personal and communal outdoor space within the development.
