Contemporary solution to match streetscape
Concept to Completion
This mixed-use development in the heart of the south Shoreditch conservation area incorporates the original 19th-century detailing to deliver contemporary architectural business and residential spaces, at the same time as conserving the historic streetscape.
Due to the extreme state of disrepair of the site’s existing building envelope, and our conversations with planners, we rebuilt the existing 1870’s shop-front and brick facade using the original corbel and cornice details. Set back from this is a modern intervention, articulated with brick cladding, flush windows and clean detailing.
The building houses nine modern apartments across five residential floors, above ground and basement floor ‘shop front’ office space. The fourth and fifth floors are stepped back to reduce the overall massing, while the top storey appears as a discrete roof extension.
